TAIPEI, Taiwan: The World Clinical Laser Institute (WCLI) held its 2026 Asia-Pacific Symposium in Taipei in October, attracting 224 dental professionals. Aimed at expanding access to clinical laser education, the event featured lectures and a panel discussion on the clinical applications of laser technology across various areas of dentistry, including implantology, periodontics, prosthodontics, and aesthetic and paediatric dentistry.

The symposium brought together dental professionals from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond to exchange clinical experiences and explore evidence-based approaches to laser dentistry. The scientific programme addressed fundamental laser principles and laser–tissue interactions, as well as applications in implant treatment, periodontal treatment and minimally invasive oral surgery. Other presentations covered photo-biomodulation, laser-assisted management of excessive gingival display and paediatric dental procedures.

Among the local speakers, Dr Selene Kuo, a prosthodontist and clinical assistant professor at Taipei Medical University, discussed strategies for integrating laser technology into full-mouth implant rehabilitation, from preparation to long-term maintenance. Dr Po Lee, a periodontist and clinical instructor at National Defense Medical University, examined how laser technology can complement conventional periodontal treatment protocols.

International speakers included Dr Josep Arnabat, an associate professor at the University of Barcelona in Spain, who addressed the physical principles of lasers and their interactions with tissue. Dr Apoorva Gupta, a periodontist from India and WCLI course director, presented an approach combining 940 nm and 2,780 nm lasers to reduce microbial contamination at periodontal and peri-implant sites. Dr Ariel Savion, a practitioner in Israel focusing on laser-assisted dentistry and microscopic surgery, discussed minimally invasive approaches to oral surgery and implant dentistry that combine microscopy and laser technology.

A panel discussion moderated by Dr Marina Polonsky, a dentist in Canada and executive director of the WCLI, examined the translation of evidence-based YSGG all-tissue laser dentistry into everyday clinical practice. Interactive question-and-answer sessions and a review of recently published research encouraged further discussion of different treatment approaches. An accompanying exhibition also provided opportunities to explore dental laser technologies and related equipment.

Professional training and examinations

Beyond the scientific programme, the WCLI offered professional training and certification opportunities. These included a two-day certified training course and fellowship and mastership examinations held ahead of the symposium, as well as an associate fellowship examination during the event.

The certified training course combined theoretical instruction with hands-on training in laser operation and clinical applications. During the practical sessions, participants worked in pairs with a dedicated laser system and received guidance from on-site support staff. The combination of lectures, practical instruction and examinations enabled participants to develop and assess their skills through a structured educational programme.

Expanding international educational opportunities

Organised by the WCLI and MegaGen Implant together with local partners, the symposium formed part of the WCLI’s efforts to strengthen international collaboration. The next WCLI Asia-Pacific Symposium is scheduled to take place next year in Seoul in South Korea. Further details will be available on the WCLI website.
